This is a painting workshop that ultimately explores watercolor  through a problem solving approach.

In years past my workshop at Sea View Inn on Pawleys Island, SC has been an exploration into the plein air experience. In 2025, however, the weather did not agree with my plans and, as teachers always do, alternative plans were made. We began by relighting the studio space in an effort to give everyone impartial lighting. We then explored photos, mine and participants, to search for inspiration from captured light. The resulting workshop became a “follow-along effort” that allowed me to pace our group through both the thumbnail sketch, as well as, the painting pursuit. The results were amazing. Rather than spending time looking for the perfect place to paint we spent time learning and painting with logical procedural success. It is with this success in mind, that I would like to let participants know we will continue to revamp our Sea View Inn experience in an effort to cultivate its utmost success. My workshop will explore capturing plein air light from Brookgreen, the seashore, and the beauty of Pawleys. With photo inspiration in hand, we will then learn the best procedures to pursue both the thumbnail sketch and our painting techniques in the comfort of our newly lit studio area. I will continue to provide multiple demonstrations both in plein air, as well as, in the studio.

This workshop is an effort to give participants not only mental information, but multiple, physical and visual problem-solving approaches that can be applied specifically to capturing light in the landscape with watercolor. Jewell will teach participants how to see into the future of their painting before they paint it, thus, allowing painters to see the desired target painting and possess the confidence to go for it. Russell Jewell’s primary medium is watercolor but his techniques come from his doctorate in art education and his 35+ years of teaching art to students.

Russell Jewell’s Artist Statement A simple black square is truly an image of everything in the world, in the dark. Therefore, regardless of my subject, all that matters is light. Too often watercolor is considered a weak, fragile, medium used by the hobbyist. This myth is just part of my artistic challenge. My greatest challenge is to push watercolor to the forefront as a medium upon which to judge all others. Life, like watercolor, is spontaneous.
